World Day of the Poor Celebration in Tai O

The World Day of the Poor is a significant observance in the Catholic Church, celebrated on the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. It was established by Pope Francis in 2016 and first observed in 2017. The day is dedicated to reflecting on the plight of the poor and to call for action to address poverty.

The theme for the 2025 World Day of the Poor is "You are my hope," as expressed by Pope Leo XIV. This theme encourages Christians to recognize the poor as protagonists of hope and to implement new initiatives to support and assist the poorest of the poor.

The celebration includes various activities such as special Masses, free meals for the poor, and initiatives to combat poverty. In India, for example, the Archbishop of Bombay launched an "ACTS" project, where people can donate food and toiletries for the poor.

The day also serves as a reminder of the importance of prayer and the need for spiritual care for the poor, who often have a special openness to the faith.
