East Asia Youth Unite in Faith: Claret Way Gathering Inspires Courage in Fukuoka

FUKUOKA, JAPAN — Young Catholics from across East Asia gathered at the Fukuoka Catholic Seminary from August 21–25 for the East Asia Delegation Claret Way. Under the guiding theme, "Rooted in Christ’s Love, We Rise with Courage," the five-day encounter brought together 26 youth delegates from Japan, Macau, and Taiwan, supported by eight dedicated facilitators.

The gathering blended spiritual growth with active community building. Each morning began with energizing group exercises, setting a vibrant tone for days filled with prayer, inspirational talks, and interactive team challenges—most notably the "Amazing Race" activity. Beyond simple games, the experience unfolded as a moment of Amazing Grace that filled the entire camp from beginning to end, reflecting life’s spiritual journey and illustrating how God’s unmerited grace dynamically guides, carries, and restores us through unexpected obstacles and shared challenges. Dedicated peace-building workshops further provided a space for meaningful cross-cultural dialogue, helping delegates forge deep bonds across language barriers.

Among the week's highlights was a contemplative night of Taizé prayer and the Sacrament of Reconciliation, offering youth a serene atmosphere for personal encounter with God and spiritual renewal.

The delegates also journeyed on a pilgrimage to historical Catholic and peace sites in Nagasaki. Standing on ground rich in both tragic history and enduring faith, they reflected deeply on peace, resilience, and their call to be instruments of hope in today’s world.

Throughout the week, Eucharistic celebrations served as the spiritual anchor. In an uplifting sharing session, Most Rev. Joseph Abella, CMF, Bishop of the Diocese of Fukuoka, encouraged the youth to anchor their identities firmly in God's love as they navigate modern challenges. Claretian Youth Coordinator Fr. Ken Masuda, CMF, echoed these sentiments, urging delegates to carry the fire of faith back to their home communities.

Serving as the crowning moment of the camp, Delegation Superior Fr. Jijo Kandamkulathy, CMF, delivered a powerful talk on mission. He directly challenged the youth to reflect on the core values they form and hold onto as they navigate life's growth and decisions, urging them to anchor their character in Christ. The gathering concluded with a moving mission-sending rite, empowering all 26 young pilgrims to return to Japan, Macau, and Taiwan ready to live out those values and serve with courageous faith.
